About Our School

Propel Andrew Street, located in Munhall, PA, offers a small learning community averaging 50 scholars at each grade level, and innovativeproject-based programming. Andrew Street continues to build on its mission to educate ALL scholars at high levels. We do this by providing equitable access to learning opportunities, embedded support to help scholars meet the demands of the 21st century, and a Culture of Dignity and empowerment for scholars to engage as active participants in their education. Special Topics in English classes that allow scholars to explore literacy through scholar-selected topics.

Scholars also have the opportunity to play on PIAA girls and boys varsity basketball teams. Prior to graduation, scholars must complete 100 hours of community service, an auto-ethnography and participate in Propel Pathways, a selection of off-site learning experiences such as dual enrollment, internships and apprenticeships. Together, we will work to provide a high-quality education for your child.

ARTS EDUCATION

Propel Andrew Street High School provides our scholars with an innovative arts education program. Our highly qualified arts-focused instructors have developed a curriculum in various arts-based subjects, including music, theater, photography, graphic design and audio production.

Arts are essential in and out of the classroom, and our scholars participate in extracurricular activities throughout the Pittsburgh-area arts community. A dynamic arts education is key to developing a holistic secondary education for our scholars.

BUILDING THE FUTURE

We continue to make history while building the future. We apprentice young people into experiences that teach them how to think and act on their behalf. Scholars develop and hone literacy, creativity, and reasoning to solve real-world problems.

We were proud to learn in a 2015 student survey that the majority of scholars at Andrew Street believe the teachers really care about them, think the teachers believe they can do well in school and believe they are getting a quality education. This sense of belonging and value has helped us maintain school safety and stellar graduation rates. Together, we will work to provide a high-quality education for your child.

IMPROVING SCIENCE CONTENT

With appropriately designed spaces, learning can go deeper.

Our new state-of-the-art science lab enables scientific exploration in a safe and collaborative environment conducive to blending mathematics and the sciences. Our science team has completed osmosis experiments with eggs, wound simulation labs, and chemical-based labs. The chemistry classes conduct flame tests on metals to observe how different electron configurations produce different flame colors, like fireworks. Scholars and educators enjoy the opportunities this well-equipped science lab space provides.

BEEKEEPING

Initiated in 2009, the Propel Andrew Street beekeeping program is one of only a few such high school programs in the country. Scholars become beekeepers—tending to the hives, harvesting honey, making other hive-based products, and completing a wide range of bee-related projects and research.

Honey sales have made the beekeeping program financially self-sustaining since it began, and in 2013 we received the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.
